I have been involved with ActionCOACH since the beginning of March 2003. I own and operate Allen's Martial Arts Academy in Greenwood Western Australia. At present we have 400 students, 14 paid staff and run 60 classes per week.

Initially I became involved with Action because of the time that was involved in growing a business of this size and its resultant pressures on my family life and of course my own. I was working 80 hour weeks and had been doing so for 5 years. Staff training was negligible, systems were dependant on me being there and we had hit a plateau that we couldn’t seem to move from.

Since working with Action there have been several changes to the operation that have been a distinct advantage to myself and my business. Firstly the time I put into the business has decreased to approximately 40 to 50 hours per week. Systems have been established so that when I am not there I can ascertain how the business is performing and design effective methods of counteracting any problems.

A systemised approach to staff training has been established that has had several advantages:

• My staff are more motivated to perform at a higher level through the creation of a mission statement and a direct way of allowing them to increase their income earning capacity as they move the business towards the Company's goals.
• Service has improved because clients are given a more professional image and are handled with care and concern.
• Interest has now been generated in our Franchising operation because prospective franchisees can see the attractive lifestyle and income possibilities.

So the goal for me now is to design a business that will allow me to have enough free time to pursue my own personal goals with no change in income. Looking back on the achievements that have been possible since starting with ActionCOACH , this next step will be a mere formality.

I've been a business owner since I was 24. I love the independence of doing things my way. I have had several businesses from retailing to manufacturing to service businesses. One of those businesses is an Automatic Transmission workshop that I own with my husband, Colin. Our business plodded along for 7 years, paying the bills and giving us a modest income.

We worked really hard and rewarded ourselves with a 1 week holiday each year. We knew we could do better in our business but didn't know how, and we didn't want to work our whole lives just to end up on a pension. We own an electrical contracting business in Perth Western Australia, which has now become more like a labour hire company. When our Action Coach first started working with us in May 2002 our bank account was in the red and our business and home were both on the line.
